FireConvertApp vs PDF24: honest head-to-head

PDF24 Tools (from Geek Software GmbH in Germany) is a genuinely generous completely-free PDF toolkit — 30+ tools including OCR, e-sign, watermark, PDF editing, and forms, plus a free Windows desktop app. Their business model is advertising, not paywalls. FireConvertApp is freemium, ad-free, broader outside PDF (HEIC, WebP, audio, video, data) with AI image tools bundled — but shallower on PDF-specific features. This is a trade: they're deeper on PDF, we're broader on everything else. Here's the honest matrix.

Feature-by-feature matrix

Best job description "I need image + PDF + audio + video + data conversions with AI tools bundled, no ads, flat-rate predictable pricing" "I need a deep, free, no-paywall PDF toolkit — OCR + e-sign + watermark + edit + forms — and I don't mind ads or trackers"

Where PDF24 beats us

PDF24 is genuinely one of the most generous free PDF toolkits on the web. Pretending otherwise would lose credibility instantly. Here's where they're the right tool:

  • PDF feature depth — 30+ tools at $0. PDF24's PDF surface is deep: OCR (scanned-to-searchable with multiple languages), in-browser PDF editing (text, shapes, annotations, images), e-signatures (draw/type/upload), watermarking with position and opacity controls, form fill + form creation, page redaction, PDF compare, organize/reorder pages, protect/unlock. We cover about 10 PDF tools — the common 20% — and don't have OCR, editing, e-sign, watermark, or forms at all. For a deep PDF workflow, they have more to work with.
  • Free OCR with no paywall. OCR (scanned PDF → searchable text) is on their free tier with multiple recognition languages. Many competitors lock OCR behind paid plans. If you're digitising paper archives, processing scanned invoices, or making old PDFs searchable, PDF24's free OCR is a real standout. We don't ship OCR yet (Q3 roadmap), so this is a clear PDF24 win today.
  • Free e-signature and watermark. PDF signing (draw a signature, type it, or upload an image, then apply and download) and watermarking (text or image, with position, rotation, opacity) are both free on PDF24. For contract-signing workflows or document-branding tasks, these are genuinely useful — and we don't ship either.
  • Windows desktop app for offline use. PDF24 Creator is a free Windows installer that adds a virtual “Print to PDF24” printer plus an offline PDF toolbox. Once installed, it works without internet. For corporate laptops with upload restrictions, offline locations, or users who prefer native apps over browser tools, this is a legitimate advantage. We're web-only.
  • Completely free forever with no paywall. No credit meter, no file-count limit, no hidden paid tier. Their model is advertising, which means the tools themselves are unlimited at $0. For budget-sensitive users who don't mind ads, “free forever” is hard to beat. Our free tier is 50 conversions/day — generous for most workflows but not technically unlimited.
  • EU data residency and 20-year tenure. Geek Software GmbH is a German company operating under GDPR jurisdiction, and PDF24 has been running since 2006. For European users or teams with data-residency requirements, an EU-based PDF tool with two decades of operational tenure is a real trust signal that we're earning more slowly as a newer independent startup.

Where we beat PDF24

  • Ad-free at every tier. No display ads, no sponsored-link sections mixed into the tool list, no affiliate banners, no ad-network trackers. PDF24's free-forever model is funded by exactly those things. For users who find ads distracting, for corporate users whose ad-blocker breaks the page, or for privacy-minded users who don't want Google/ad-tech trackers loaded on every tool page, the ad-free experience is a meaningful quality-of-life difference.
  • Non-PDF breadth — HEIC, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, BMP, ICO. PDF24 is PDF-focused by design — JPG/PNG show up around PDF work but they don't cover modern image formats. iPhone photos arrive as HEIC — they can't process it, we can. WebP and AVIF for modern web? We handle them both directions. Scanner TIFF, Windows BMP, favicon ICO? All covered. For real-world workflows where files arrive in whatever format the source device chose, our image breadth matters.
  • Audio, video, and data conversion. MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, MP4, MOV, WebM, GIF, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML. If your file workflow spans media types — mixing images and audio clips and PDF and data exports in one week — a pure PDF toolkit covers one corner; we cover the whole neighbourhood.
  • AI image tools bundled — they don't ship any. Background removal ( /remove-background) and 2×/4× upscaling ( /upscale-image) — free, unlimited, running fully in your browser via ONNX. remove.bg alone charges $9–$99/mo for background removal. PDF24 has no AI tooling at all. If your workflow ever needs “remove this background” or “upscale this low-res image” alongside PDF work, we cover both in one tool.
  • Cleaner modern UI. Our tool directory is organized, minimal, and free of ad clutter. PDF24's UI is functional but visually dated — ad boxes between tool tiles, sponsored-link sections, older page layouts. For users who want a clean modern product aesthetic, we're closer to current design norms.
  • Better mobile experience. Every tool on our site is designed responsive-first and works cleanly on phones. PDF24 has a mobile-friendly site but originated as a desktop-first product, and some tools don't adapt as cleanly to small screens. If you process files on your phone frequently, the mobile-first design shows.
  • Predictable flat-rate paid tiers. For users who want more than 50 conversions/day or higher file-size limits, our Basic ($12.99/mo), Standard ($24.99/mo), and Pro ($29.99/mo) tiers give unlimited conversions at a flat rate — no ads, no meter, just clean predictable billing. PDF24 has no paid tier for end users, which is great for $0 budgets but offers no upgrade path for power users who want more throughput or API access with flat-rate pricing.

Pricing — side-by-side

PDF24 consumer tools have been free-forever since their 2006 launch; verified on pdf24.org as of 2026-04-24. Their API has a separate commercial tier for production use.

Pricing side-by-side across four tiers.

The honest math: PDF24 is unbeatable on raw “PDF tools for $0” — if that's your only need and ads don't bother you, nobody beats their free-forever model. If you want ad-free, non-PDF breadth, AI image tools, or a predictable flat-rate paid tier for power use, our freemium model fits better.

Which should you use when?

This is genuinely a “both are useful” comparison — they solve overlapping but not identical jobs. Honest rule of thumb:

  1. Use PDF24 for deep PDF-specific work. If your task is OCR on scanned documents, in-browser PDF editing, e-signing a contract, adding watermarks, filling or creating PDF forms, redaction, or you need a Windows desktop app for offline PDF work — PDF24 has those tools free and we don't. If you don't mind ads and trackers, it's the deeper tool for pure PDF workflows.
  2. Use FireConvertApp when the workflow spans beyond PDF. iPhone HEIC photos that need converting? /heic-to-jpg. Modern WebP for a website? /convert-image. Audio, video, or data files mixed into the workflow? We cover all of those. Need background removal or upscaling? /remove-background and /upscale-image are free and unlimited. For the common PDF operations — compress, merge, split, convert to/from Word/JPG/Excel — we cover those too with a cleaner ad-free UI.
  3. Use both if that's what fits. Many users will realistically end up using PDF24 for the occasional OCR job or contract-sign task, and FireConvertApp for everyday image + PDF + audio/video conversions in a clean ad-free UI. No rule says you can't have both in your bookmarks — different tools for different jobs.

The real comparison isn't “which is the better converter” — it's “which fits the shape of your file work.” PDF24 is the deepest free PDF toolkit on the web, funded by ads. We're a broader ad-free converter with AI image tools. Both honest, both useful, different jobs.

Common questions

Is PDF24 really completely free?
Yes, genuinely. PDF24 Tools is free at unlimited volume with no paywall on any of their 30+ PDF tools. Their Windows desktop app (PDF24 Creator) is free to download and use. Their business model is advertising — display ads on the tool pages, occasional sponsored-link sections in the tool directory, and affiliate/promotional placements for their own desktop installer. There's no hidden paid tier, no credit meter, no file-count limit. It's a real "free forever" PDF toolkit funded by ads. For anyone whose only need is PDF-specific work and who's fine with ads + ad-network trackers, it's a legitimately generous offer.
Then why wouldn't I just use PDF24?
Three reasons, if any fit: (1) PDF24 is a PDF-only toolkit — if your daily workflow also touches HEIC iPhone photos, WebP/AVIF for web, audio/video, or CSV/JSON/XML data files, they don't cover those at all; we do, all in one place. (2) PDF24 is ad-supported, which means Google/ad-network trackers on every page you visit and visual noise around the tool — if you prefer an ad-free clean UI, we're that. (3) PDF24 has no bundled AI image tools — background removal and 2×/4× upscaling are genuinely useful adjacent tools we ship free; they don't. If none of those apply and you're doing pure PDF work, PDF24 is a great free option and we won't pretend otherwise.
Is PDF24 better than FireConvertApp for PDF-specific tasks?
For many PDF-specific tasks, yes — honestly. PDF24 has 30+ dedicated PDF tools including OCR (scanned-to-searchable), in-browser PDF editing (add text, shapes, annotations), e-signatures (draw/type/upload), watermarking, form fill + creation, redaction, PDF compare, and organize/reorder pages. We have about 10 PDF tools — the common 20% most users actually need (compress, merge, split, rotate, PDF↔Word/JPG/Excel, unlock). For a deep PDF workflow that needs OCR + edit + sign + watermark + forms, PDF24 has more depth than we do. If you're digitising paper archives, running a contract-signing workflow, or doing heavy in-browser PDF editing, they're the better tool for that job today.
What about the Windows desktop app?
PDF24 Creator is a free Windows installer that adds a virtual PDF printer ("Print to PDF24" from any application) plus an offline PDF toolbox. For Windows-centric offline workflows — a corporate laptop where you'd rather not upload files to a web tool, or a location with unreliable internet — having a native desktop app is a legitimate advantage. We're web-only. If offline Windows PDF work is your thing, PDF24's desktop app is a real reason to stay on them.
Does FireConvertApp have OCR like PDF24?
Not yet. OCR (optical character recognition — turning a scanned PDF into searchable/editable text) is a genuine PDF24 headline feature that they offer free with multiple recognition languages. It's on our Q3 2026 roadmap but isn't live today. If you regularly OCR scanned documents, PDF24 is the better tool for that specific job right now and we'll say it plainly. When we ship OCR, it'll be via a similar in-browser model that keeps the file on your device; until then, PDF24 covers that workflow.
Is the ad experience on PDF24 actually a problem?
Depends on your tolerance. The ads are standard web display ads — not deceptive, not modal popups, not malicious — but they're there on every tool page and the tool directory has sponsored-link sections. If you're on a corporate network with ad-blocker rules you might see weird page layout; if you care about ad-network tracking (Google, ad tech, retargeting pixels), that's the cost of the free-forever model. For privacy-minded users or teams that dislike ads in a work tool, the ad-free experience of a freemium model like ours is a meaningful quality-of-life difference. For casual home use where ads are just background noise, PDF24's model is fine.
